"this world doesn't deserve us"
----
i wrote this piece last december in the aftermath of frustrating debates, the launch of operation relentless pursuit, and continued egregious behavior from the chicago police department. its message, however, is far from limited to any one event.
----
as i said before, the song is for every black body that has gone overlooked - those who were wrongfully taken from us before their time, those whose impacts on culture and society went unrecognized for far too long, those who do the kind of good in their communities that isn't divisive enough to be considered newsworthy. this song is for the countless people who were taken from their homes to be enslaved. this song is for Greenwood District, the Black Wall Street. this song is for Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges - the black composer mozart envied. this song is for Sister Rosetta Thorpe - the black woman who essentially invented rock and roll, the real reason we use distortion on guitars today. this song is for Laquan McDonald, Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, Breonna Taylor, Sandra Bland, Tamir Rice, Emmett Till, Kendra James, Natasha McKenna, Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, and decidedly too many others.
----
this song is for those who have stood up in protest from long before any of us were born to the current moment. we are better, we are more, than what this world has told us we are worth. we will fight police brutality and all other forms of bureaucratic brutality - as well as media bias and the perceived "lesser-than" framework the entire world has been systemically predisposed to. the world as it is now, as it has been, does not deserve to have taken what we've given it and have it be reappropriated and reframed to make us look like villains. this world has no right to try, over and over again, to crush such souls as ours. we are not lesser-than, and we will change this world into one that does not assume who we are or take us for granted. but until then, this world doesn't deserve us.
